The House voted decisively to table Rep. Al Green’s impeachment resolution against President Trump, but the real story is the 64 Democrats, 18 voting to kill it outright, 46 voting “present”, who refused to back their colleague’s effort.
The final tally was 232 to 147 on Tuesday, with Republicans and a bloc of Democrats combining to shelve the resolution through a procedural motion that disposed of it without forcing a direct up-or-down impeachment vote. Green, a Texas Democrat who has made impeachment his signature cause, accused his own party’s leadership of shielding the president.
The vote laid bare a rift inside the Democratic caucus less than two months before the November election: nearly 150 members voted to move forward with impeachment proceedings, but their own leadership refused to join them, and a sizable minority actively worked to stop it.
