You may have seen reports referencing a “Mass Casualty Incident” declared during today’s emergency response at the Ashore Hotel. We understand that the term can sound alarming—but here’s what it really means:
A Mass Casualty Incident DOES NOT mean there are deaths.
In Maryland EMS, the term Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) or Unusual Event is used when the number of patients exceeds the typical resources available—not because of the severity of injuries.
For example: Today, 18 individuals were evaluated on scene for possible carbon monoxide exposure. Only four patients required transport to the hospital for further treatment.
When an MCI is declared, it simply allows us to bring in more EMS resources to make sure everyone gets the care they need quickly and efficiently and in collaboration with local hospitals.
This terminology is part of the statewide EMS protocol used by fire departments and rescue services across Maryland.
We appreciate the public’s concern and always strive to keep our community informed with facts and clarity.
