BALTIMORE — Attorneys general from 18 states sued Tuesday to block President Donald Trump’s move to end a decades-old immigration policy known as birthright citizenship guaranteeing that U.S.-born children are citizens regardless of their parents’ status.
Trump’s roughly 700-word executive order, issued late Monday, amounts to a fulfillment of something he’s talked about during the presidential campaign. But whether it succeeds is far from certain amid what is likely to be a lengthy legal battle over the president’s immigration policies.
- Can the president do this? A Baltimore law professor weighs in on the birthright citizenship executive order, more here and watch video above.
New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin, a Democrat, said Tuesday that presidents might have broad authority but they are not kings.
“The president cannot, with a stroke of a pen, write the 14th Amendment out of existence, period,” he said.
The White House said it’s ready to face the states in court and called the lawsuits “nothing more than an extension of the Left’s resistance.”
“Radical Leftists can either choose to swim against the tide and reject the overwhelming will of the people, or they can get on board and work with President Trump,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields said.
Here’s a closer look at birthright citizenship, Trump’s executive order and reaction to it:
The “article” neglects to provide the cost to taxpayers of providing legal services to illegal aliens, and those who aren’t even born yet! MD OK with killing American babies but care so much for those of illegal aliens.
Most of Maryland residents are Trump supporters. Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and maybe a one or two other counties with high black population are dominate.
I can’t wait to leave this state
Throw me an anchor
There lies the problem and ANOTHER REASON why I’m moving out…
I know for a fact it’s the reason “they” come to md ..free ride free hospital and now your a monster wanting to throw mommy and daddy who pushed you out here.
ILLEGALL OCCUPIERS IS NOT IN THE CONSTITUTION!
Hypocrites 1048 the pitfalls of luciferian ideals.
Round them up!
No other country ( to my knowledge ) has birthright citizenship – why do we?
According to the Law Library of Congress and the Central Intelligence Agency, 33 countries offer unconditional birthright citizenship similar to the United States. They include:
Antigua and Barbuda
Argentina
Barbados
Belize
Bolivia
Brazil
Canada
Cuba
Dominica
Ecuador
El Salvador
Fiji
Grenada
Guatemala
Guinea-Bissau
Guyana
Honduras
Jamaica
Lesotho
Mexico
Nicaragua
Pakistan
Panama
Paraguay
Peru
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Lucia
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Tanzania
Trinidad and Tobago
Tuvalu
Uruguay
Venezuela
Other countries grant citizenship if a person is born in a country and they meet other conditions. For example, many countries, including France, Chile, and Portugal, offer birthright citizenship depending on whether one or both of the child’s parents are citizens of the country, according to the Law Library of Congress.
In other cases, the parent just has to be a legal resident in order for the child to get birthright citizenship, the Law Library of Congress explains. For example, in Australia and Malaysia, one of the child’s parents must be a citizen or a permanent resident. Germany is another example, where one of the child’s parents must have resided in the country for eight years and have a Swiss citizen residence permit. In Thailand, both parents must be legal residents.
A little Goggle goes a long way.
