According to New York Post on Monday, August 7, 2023, former top FBI counterintelligence agent Charles McGonigal is expected to plead guilty next week to charges that he illegally worked with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska while concealing their relationship from the bureau. McGonigal, 54, was indicted in January on charges including money laundering and violating US sanctions against Deripaska. According to the indictment, McGonigal tried to get Deripaska removed from the US sanctions list while also pursuing overseas business trips and travel that created conflicts of interest with his role at the FBI.
