County Delays Salary Increase Call

SALISBURY – County leaders this week agreed to postpone a discussion on compensations for the county executive and sheriff after a lengthy discussion on the level of pay expected for each position.

Last month, members of the Wicomico County Compensation and Allowance Commission came before the Wicomico County Council with recommended pay increases for the county executive, county council and the Wicomico County sheriff.

Beginning in 2022, the commission recommended an annual salary of $124,000 for the county executive position (currently $85,000), $25,000 for the Wicomico County Council president (currently $18,000), $23,000 for the Wicomico County Council vice president (currently $17,000) and $21,000 for council members (currently $16,000). The commission also recommended increasing the sheriff’s salary from $95,000 to $121,000.

Back on the agenda for discussion Tuesday, council members agreed to move forward with proposed salary increases at the council level, but to table discussions on proposed pay increases for the county executive and sheriff until the results of a salary study could be reviewed.

“I think it may give us a better perspective, once we’ve seen the salary study for all the positions in Wicomico County,” said Council President John Cannon. “Then we can make this determination.”

  1. What about BOE members. current pay is $3,700 a year. board members had over seventy-two meetings and events last year. This does not include daily readings and preparation for meetings.

    1. Well Mr./Ms. BOE member WTF are you whining about it in here for? If you don’t know what is needed to get a salary increase for the BOE members then you shouldn’t be in that position!

    1. They need to up the pee-ons pay and get some decent help to clean up Harmon field parking lot and surrounding. Leaves , tree branches and trash all in the parking lot. Even wood where the trash can posts were hacked off laying on the ground beside the poles. Jakes city is in shambles.

BOE and their union cohorts are the Biggest joke and useless tax sucking cesspool pit. Should be the first on any spending reduction plans. I don’t see any bang for my buck considering how much taxes I pay.

  3. The Wicomico County Executive Office is being eliminated. Do not need an Executive since there has not been one in over two years!

    1. Do you people know Wayne ‘THE SNOTTY SNOB” Strausburg is still on the Wicomico County taxpayer dole at the tune of $75.00 per hour? Never really seen Psota speak or do anything until Julie and Ernie announced they were running for county executive. He is arrogant better than the regular person empty suit. Remember Culver appointed him to replace double dipping Wayne and he is getting that salary of 120k not 85k. Get rid of Psota ,Strausburg and Paul Wilber too.

  4. A 1% or 2% percent raise would be more than sufficient for these positions! The State of Maryland does not even give out raises like this! This should be brought up at election time and let us tax paying voters decide!!!!!! No one is forcing any of these elected officials to stay in office, it is all about POWER! You don’t like your pay QUIT!!!

    1. You do realize the the County Executive position hasn’t increased since it’s inception 16 years ago and the county council even much longer. Why would you compare it to the state who gets annual increases every year and much higher. ROTFLMAO

      1. The County Executive Office will be voted out by the taxpayers of this County Period! Good bye to this worthless waste of taxpayers money to the tune of $936,000 dollars a year!

Please tell me so we as voters and taxpaying citizens can get these people out of this office!!! I need names of these colluders with the County Council!!! Sounds like the buddy system is in effect here folks!!!

  6. Only increase I see announced that deserves it is the WICOMICO COUNTY SHERIFF. The others have done nothing for the COUNTY RESIDENTS. They are the ones along with the WCBOE that needs to have salary reductions for VERY POOR PREFORMANCE. Teachers don’t want to go to school and teach so include them in with the salary reduction and give me a tax break instead of letting WCBOE waste the unused money.
    These are the things WICOMICO COUNTY COUNCIL should be working on instead of making all their homeboys richer and taxing us for it.

  8. Well if Ernie Davis is running for the County Executive position he should recuse from voting on that. He doesn’t have a chance in Hell of getting elected but he still should recuse himself.

  9. Just watched the meeting on pac 14.
    Posota begging for a raise because he knows he is the chosen one. It is apparent that a deal was struck with the four liberals on the council however they didn’t read the charter. Loved it when Holloway corrected Wilber about the process,and the taxpayers are paying Wilber how much and he doesn’t know the charter. It is interesting to see the developers that have donated to Posota, they are paying off for the Horizon giveaway.

    The chairman was an SU prof named Derekor who is tight with Dunn and the Great Salisbury Committee that want to run the County.

    The proposed pay increase is almost 50% for the County Executive, which the Commission says would attract better candidates. But Cannon wants to delay any vote until after the deadline to file to run expires in February. If that happens there will be no reason to raise the pay by any amount.

    The most similar County, Cecil County, pays its executive $98,000. Council members Todd, Acle and Holloway want to raise the salary here to slightly more than that – by about 18% to $100,000 – but that would be pointless if not done before the deadline to file to run in the election this year.
