Pet goldfish dumped into a Minnesota lake have swelled into monsters, photos show

Massive goldfish have become an invasive species in a lake in Minnesota where people have released their pet fish.

Officials in Burnsville said last week that releasing pet goldfish into lakes and ponds could wreak havoc on ecosystems.

“Please don’t release your pet goldfish into ponds and lakes. They grow bigger than you think!” a post on the city’s Facebook page said, adding that they “can contribute to poor water quality by mucking up the bottom sediments and uprooting plants.”

  1. They will grow larger according to the tank they are in. We started with a goldfish from a carnival. We had it in a small octagon tank. After he stared to get too big for that we bought a 10 gallon tank. He finally ended up in our fish pond and live there many years.

  2. I gotta tell ya, using those feeder type goldfish as bait really works for Pike and Bass. The goldfish is very visible in brackish water and lively on a hook.

  3. Yeah and the NYC sewers are full of flushed Alligator pets and the Everglades full of exotic snakes. We should be worried about what’s really getting fat and over populated and it’s not wild life.

  4. Yah, I saw this on a commercial. The girl on the back of the boat catches a golden fish and the dad squeezes it and gets many gold coins out.
