State Troopers Investigating Fatal Motorcycle Crash

Delmar, DE – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred earlier this afternoon east of Delmar, DE.

The crash occurred around 4:25 p.m., Sunday July 11, 2021, as a 2013 Nissan Frontier pickup truck operated by 70-year-old Delmar, DE man was traveling northbound on Pepperbox Road preparing to turn left onto Elliott’s Lane. A 2002 Victory Deluxe touring motorcycle operated by a 46-year-old Bridgeville man was traveling southbound on Pepperbox Road approaching Elliott’s Lane.  The Nissan pickup truck began to make the left turn directly into the path of the motorcycle.  In an attempt to avoid a collision, the motorcyclist applied the brakes and laid the motorcycle down approximately 120’ away from the truck.  At the same time, the pickup truck stopped in the middle of the roadway and as a result, the motorcycle and the operator slid into the front right side of the truck.  The motorcycle careened off the truck and came to a stop off the roadway while the motorcycle operator came to a stop up against the front right tire.

The 46-year-old man, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 70-year-old man was properly restrained and was uninjured in the collision.

Pepperbox Road between Line Road and Baker Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

    1. ? for all involved and families. The crash is under investigation and until completed I will not condemn anyone.

  1. I was going down Nanticoke Road last week on my bike. I had cruise control set at 58mph like I always do. While that is technically speeding if you go any slower you have a line of cars riding on your back tire which is equally dangerous.

There was a truck behind me for a good distance and then it decides to pass. When it passes me I notice its hauling a john boat on a trailer. I immediately prepared for the usual trash that people leave in their boats to blow out and come at me. All to often I see Lunchables packaging, soda bottles and beer cans flying out of the boats when people are coming back from Nanticoke area.

This time it was a freakin big blue plastic tote about the size of a large cooler blew out of the back of the boat and came right at me. It smashed on the road and debris flew everywhere. I was able to avoid it but if that had blown out while he was passing I could have been killed. Hell I could have been killed anyway. It was only for the fact that I drive Nanticoke road all the time that I was prepared for something to fly out of the boat which ultimately saved me.

I couldn’t help but think that 58MPH wasn’t fast enough for that guy that he has to blow past a motorcycle with a bunch of crap in his boat unsecured. Was the extra speed he was trying to get worth somebodies life ?

I know there are a lot of idiots out on bike as well but many of us are good safe riders. We ride at reasonable speeds and do our best to be seen and heard. Yet people seem to have no clue as to the dangerous situation they create by being impatient.

That’s like when I ride my bike at night. I am always on watch for Deer especially on Nanticoke Rd. Even though my headlights are stock, when I am riding with my Low Beams people sometime still think I am riding with high beams and flash their high beams in my eyes. Ok I get it that is the universal signal to tell others to “Turn off their darn High Beams” but when you flash your high beams to a biker at night your blinding them and then all they see is spots from the lights afterwards which makes almost impossible to see deer or debris in the road.

Combine all this with people cutting their grass and throwing out in the road which is like throwing grease on the road, people flicking lit cigarettes out their window with a motorcycle riding behind them and then people like the guy in the story who cuts a bike off at a turn or intersection just to save a few seconds its not a wonder we don’t have even more deaths and injury.

Yes bikes can be dangerous especially if you ride your bike like an idiot but there are a lot of us safe riders out there who do a lot of good for our community. We have a right to be on the road just as much as cars and trucks. Its just a shame that so many people are in a hurry these days or have just gotten so self involved that they don’t consider the safety of others who may be sharing the road with them.

One thing I noticed though is that in Motorcycle safety school you learn over and over to watch out for cars and to make sure they can see you but in automotive driving school they spend very little time training drivers to watch out for motorcycles and to consider that they have to react to hazards on the road in a much different manner than cars or trucks.

  2. Based on the police report, the guy apparently wasn’t watching when he made his left turn causing the accident. I hope he gets charged and has his license taken away.

  3. There are too many OLD PEOPLE around here that just go out for a drive nosing around to see what is going on meanwhile they complain about gas prices and will drive to Seaford to save three cents. Stay off the road before 11 am on Tuesdays they are all out with their Long Ranger shades over their trifocals to get some discount somewhere. Parking lots around here are more dangerous than the Roads. If your fat old crippled ass can’t climb out of a Monster Truck don’t get a Handicap tag get a Ford Fiesta your insurance might even go down. I wait in the car while my wife shops and watch the stupid shit people do and they think all the retirees from elsewhere are bad drivers meanwhile these bumpkins can’t back out of a parking space. I’d love to see them parallel park that would add half an hour to their outings.

  4. With all your hate, you don’t have to be concerned in aging. Nature will take its course. Oh, take the whole dose as prescribed. Cutting it in half to save a buck is not working out.
