February – 2021 – MSP Salisbury received a complaint of aggressive driving and reckless operation of
motorists in a rural portion of Wicomico County, namely Nanticoke Road from Salisbury to Bivalve
Maryland. Residents of the community noted the behaviors of motorists have only become more
aggressive and detrimental to transiting the area. Using High Visibility Enforcement (HVE), statistical
enforcement principles and responding to the needs of the community, MSP Salisbury initiated a
mandatory speed enforcement and aggressive driving effort in the area. Troopers were to provide a
visible presence throughout the corridor when weather conditions and calls for service allowed for
such an effort.
Over the course of thirty days – MSP Salisbury conducted 12 High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) patrols,
utilizing 18 various troopers and nearly expending 44 hours of man hours over the course of five
weeks. During such time, troopers conducted 78 traffic stops issuing 33 citations, 34 warnings and 2
Safety Equipment Repair Orders (SERO). Also encountered were two DUI arrests, four vehicle
searches recording two civil Citations for CDS <10 mg issued and two CDS arrests made for CDS Other than Marijuana. Speed violations included speeds of 74, 71, 70, 67, 66, 65, and 60 in a 50 mph zone. Other speeds included 56 and 48 mph in a 30 zone. Paired with violations of Negligent and Distracted Driving, the effort put forth by members of the MSP Salisbury Barrack “E” saw a drop in collisions – both alcohol impaired and not, as well as complaints of aggressive driving dropped.
Efforts similar to this will continue to be made in surrounding areas of the community. The Maryland
State Police was organized in 1921 and charged with reducing crime and highway tragedies through
statewide patrol and relentless enforcement of criminal and traffic laws. This directive has not
changed and remains the focus of what we do each day. We are proud of our tradition of excellence
in serving and protecting the people of Maryland.
It’s too bad all the police agencies all the time don’t have such an aggressive enforcement action. I travel Nanticoke Road several times a week and few vehicles travel the posted speed limit between Parsons Road and Crockett Lane.
In another part of the county, Coulbourn Mill Road, a vehicle passed me in a no passing zone while going about 40 in a 30 MPH area. He soon was out of sight.
Good job Maryland State Police on the Nanticoke Road patrols
Good! That road is a pain in the ass to travel on.
People speed down Nanticoke road all the time! I have lived on Nanticoke road my entire life and drivers just don’t care about the 50 MPH speed limit!! It seems they can’t get down to the Westside of the county fast enough! Keep up the strict enforcement and maybe place a speed camera down there!!!! Speeders BEWARE!
DAMN!!! No mention of Sheriff Shawty and no involvement by the Sheriff’s Office!!
That’s a slap in the face to Sheriff Shawty Lewis and the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office! The Maryland State Police is doing the job of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and not a peep out of Mike Lewis!
Can we get a statement from Sheriff Shawty, please!
