Proposed Regulation: Chesapeake Bay Western Shore – Construction Zone around the Bay Bridge

A regulatory proposal has been printed in the Maryland Register to establish a 6-knot speed zone that would be effective at all times through March 31, 2026, in the Chesapeake Bay for the area surrounding the construction site of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s Eastbound Bay Bridge Deck Replacement Project:

The Department of Natural Resources is seeking comments on the proposed regulation. Comments provide the department with additional information and perspectives.

Please visit our Changes to Boating Regulations page for information about what has been proposed and how to submit comments.

All comments must be received by 11:59 p.m. on August 14, 2023.

Please note that in addition to this proposed regulation for Chesapeake Bay Western Shore – Construction Zone around the Bay Bridge (above), there is already in effect a regulation for Chesapeake Bay Eastern Shore – Construction Zone around the Bay Bridge.

  1. It’s for safety of crews working on the bridge. Cranes are on barges lifting and or setting items needed for the bridge upgrade. If the barge moves on the water, the movement of the load hanging from the hook at the tip end of the crane boom is amplified many times over. Workers can get severely injured when the load shifts unexpectedly.
