The warning system is designed to alert residents and visitors of Wicomico County about
an imminent hazard to include weather-related danger such as a tornado warning.
Wicomico’s siren system consisting of 14 sirens located at local fire departments and three
(3) maintained by the Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services (DES) can be
activated for specific affected areas in the county. In the event of an imminent hazard the
alert tone – which differs from fire station alarms – will sound for a sustained 2 minutes.
They are tested at 6:30 pm the first Monday of every month for 10 seconds. When the
sirens sound, citizens should seek shelter immediately and then tune into local news
media for additional information. Citizens should not call 9-1-1 to determine the hazard
causing the activation.
Residents of the County can obtain additional information on the sirens as well as other
emergency preparedness topics by utilizing the DES web site at www.wicomicocounty.org/es in
the section entitled Emergency Preparedness Topics or by calling 410-548-4820 for information.
Go to the QUICK LINKS section on the right side of the DES web site and select ESPANOL to
the have the web site translated to Spanish or select KREYOL AYISYEN to the have the web
site translated to Haitian Creole.
Could they have possibly made this harder to read?
Actually this could work if they had somebody that they had been properly trained to read a weather map. I heard the sirens go off the other night when we had all the tornado warnings around, only one problem the siren went off and I turned the tv to the weather channel to see what was going on and the tornados were in OC, I live on the West Side of town, so why were they going off for Salisbury, unless I missed a tornado that was headed to Salisbury and nobody warned us about it, my phone usually goes off but there was no warning that night so at least it knew where the tornados were and when not to alert for something that was not in the area. So back to the drawing board guys because these sirens are not working right.
