Proposal would pause federal gas, diesel taxes through end of year
Rep. Andy Harris is proposing that Congress suspend federal gasoline and diesel taxes through the end of the year, although the measure faces a steep path to passage with the House in recess until after the November elections.
The Eastern Shore’s Republican congressman blamed higher prices at the pump on what he called “Democrat policies” that restricted drilling, pipelines, and refinery operations. He also cited the war in Iran, which has disrupted supply.
Nearly seven months into that conflict, fuel prices “went much higher than they should’ve gone,” Harris told OC Today-Dispatch, “and my bill tries to provide relief for that.”
It’s going to take way more than suspended taxes to make gasoline and diesel fuel affordable.
It’s a start.
