Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday formally requested that Texas Comptroller Don Huffines investigate the finances of up to four independent school districts, focusing on whether taxpayer dollars are reaching classrooms rather than fueling central-office growth and noninstructional bureaucracy.
In a letter dated August 19, 2026, Abbott cited Texas’ $104.9 billion in K-12 education spending and called for a targeted review under Section 111.003(a)(1) and (2) of the Texas Tax Code to determine if public funds are being used for their lawful, intended purposes.
The final report is due by December 31, 2026, ahead of the 90th Legislature.
