Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is publicly lobbying Sen. John Fetterman to remain a Democrat, a move that reveals just how far the Pennsylvania senator has strayed from his own party’s leadership.
Schumer praised Fetterman as “a very good member of Congress” and insisted the Democratic caucus still has room for him. “People in our caucus very much like him and respect him, and we’re a big-tent party,” Schumer said. “We can have a lot of different views in that party.”
The plea came as Fetterman has grown louder about his willingness to walk away. In an NBC News interview this week, the senator from Pennsylvania offered a blunt invitation to his colleagues: “If the Democratic caucus doesn’t want me, they could just let me know.”
