Sen. Josh Hawley is publicly pressing fellow Republican Mitch McConnell to disclose the full extent of his medical condition, a rare intra-party challenge that exposes how one senator’s silence is stalling the GOP agenda
Hawley, the Missouri Republican, told Fox News Digital in an interview published Sunday that the 84-year-old McConnell owes the public a straight answer about what happened to him and when, or whether, he plans to return to the Senate floor.
McConnell, the Senate majority leader from Kentucky, has been absent since June 14, when he fell at his home and was hospitalized. For weeks afterward, his office offered little detail. He released a photo of himself in a hospital bed alongside his wife, Elaine Chao, on July 12, nearly a month after the fall, paired with a statement from his Senate office. But the prolonged silence drew growing frustration from within his own party, and Hawley became the most prominent Republican willing to say so out loud.
Hawley: ‘You do have an obligation to your constituents’
Hawley did not hold back, though he framed his criticism as concern rather than hostility. He said he wished McConnell well, then made clear that good wishes do not excuse a lack of candor.
