Ilhan Omar claims Minnesota ‘defeated’ ICE in viral video — and the backlash was immediate

Rep. Ilhan Omar posted a short video to Facebook this week declaring that Minnesota had “defeated ICE’s racist terror campaign”, a claim that drew swift mockery online and raised fresh questions about how a sitting member of Congress defines victory over federal  law enforcement.

The roughly ten-second clip, first reported by the New York Post, shows the 43-year-old Minnesota Democrat sitting in a chair, adjusting her blazer, fidgeting with a microphone, and taking a deep breath while dramatic instrumental music plays. A text overlay reads: “Me preparing for the documentary on how we defeated ICE’s racist terror campaign in Minnesota.” Her caption added: “We’re built different in Minnesota.”

The format mimics a viral documentary confessional trend popular on social media. But the substance, a congresswoman boasting about obstructing a federal immigration operation, is something else entirely.

What Omar calls a ‘defeat’

The video appears to reference Operation Metro Surge, the ICE enforcement action carried out in Minnesota in early 2026. The White House said at the time that the operation resulted in the arrest of more than 4,000 illegal immigrants in the state. That is not a small number. It is, by any conventional measure, a large-scale federal enforcement success.
