Salisbury, MD — Wicomico County officials remind all residents that the countywide burn ban remains in effect and will continue until it is formally lifted by the Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services.
In accordance with a resolution adopted by the Wicomico County Council, the authority to determine when conditions are safe to resume open burning rests with the Department of Emergency Services. At this time, that determination has not been made, and the ban remains fully in place.
The burn ban was enacted due to a combination of environmental and public safety concerns. Recent dry conditions, low humidity levels, and increased wind patterns have significantly elevated the risk of uncontrolled fires. These conditions make it easier for even small, contained burns to spread rapidly, posing a serious threat to homes, businesses, agricultural lands, and first responders.
“Our priority is the safety of our residents and the protection of our communities,” said County Executive Julie Giordano. “These restrictions are not put in place lightly, but they are necessary given the current conditions. We ask for everyone’s continued cooperation to prevent avoidable emergencies.”
During the burn ban, all open burning is prohibited. This includes the burning of yard debris, trash, and other materials. Residents are encouraged to seek alternative disposal methods and remain vigilant in avoiding any activities that could inadvertently spark a fire.
Wicomico County officials will continue to monitor conditions closely in coordination with emergency management personnel. Updates will be provided as soon as it is safe to lift the ban.
We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation in helping keep Wicomico County safe.
