The Assateague herd is down one horse after Gokey GoGo Bones died of natural causes last week. The 23-year-old mare passed away on the island Jan. 7.
Gokey GoGo Bones, identified through the park’s alphanumeric system as horse N2BHS-A, was part of the Sarah’s SweetTea band, but was often found wandering alone near the causeway entering the park or roaming around the state park campgrounds, according to the Assateague Island Alliance (AIA), a nonprofit friends group that educates and raises awareness of wildlife and natural resources on the island.
