Cruise Health Alert as First Norovirus Outbreak of the Year Sickens Nearly 90

A new health alert is drawing attention from cruise travelers after federal officials confirmed the first reported cruise ship norovirus outbreak of the year. Nearly 90 passengers and crew members became ill during a recent voyage, underscoring a familiar risk for those who enjoy cruising, particularly retirees who make up a large portion of cruise guests.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak occurred aboard a ship operated by Holland America Line. The cruise departed from Fort Lauderdale in late December and returned in early January. During the voyage, dozens of passengers and several crew members reported gastrointestinal symptoms consistent with norovirus, including vomiting and diarrhea.

Health officials indicated that the total number of reported cases included more than 80 passengers and fewer than 10 crew members. While that represents a small percentage of those on board, the situation was significant enough to trigger enhanced sanitation procedures and formal CDC monitoring under its Vessel Sanitation Program.
