State of Maryland Board of Public Works Approves Key Investments for Wicomico County

SALISBURY , MD — At its December 17, 2025 meeting, the Maryland Board of Public Works approved a series of grants and funding awards that include direct investments and benefits for Wicomico County, supporting parks, recreation, land conservation, and community development initiatives.

The Board approved more than $12.9 million in Maryland Department of Natural Resources grants for local parks and land preservation projects statewide, including specific allocations for Wicomico County.

Wicomico County Highlights from the Board of Public Works Meeting

🌳 Parks & Recreation Enhancements
• Winterplace Park Lighting: Funding was approved for the purchase of field lighting at Winterplace Park to improve safety and extend usable hours for community sports and recreation.

🌲 Land Conservation & Outdoor Spaces
• As part of the broader Program Open Space – Local initiative, Wicomico County joins other jurisdictions in preserving and enhancing local green spaces that support outdoor recreation and quality of life.

💼 Additional State Support
• Although not specific only to Wicomico County, the Board’s actions included wide-ranging awards in local and rural conservation programs that benefit communities across Maryland, strengthening environmental stewardship and community access to outdoor spaces.

County Executive, Julie Giordano,  stated, “These state investments are a meaningful win for Wicomico County. Improvements like the new lighting at Winterplace Park enhance safety, expand access to our recreational spaces, and support the families and youth who use them every day. We appreciate the partnership with the State of Maryland as we continue investing in our community.”

  1. The “Board of Public Works” sounds like an independent group of people, at least 10 or more, who study, analyze and decide priorities for public engineering projects in Maryland. In reality, the Board of Public Works is composed of only three people: the Governor, the State Comptroller, and the State Treasurer, all of whom already have their fingers in the pie and know whose palms to grease and how much they can get away with. You can look it up!

  2. You sure need lights not to twist a ankle in the terrible stone pothole parking lot there. When me and my dog walk I also see the old barn near old ocean city road is in structural decline and possibly a safety issue. Hopefully these issues will be addressed.
