BALTIMORE (WBFF) — The taxpayer-backed Baltimore Children and Youth Fund (BCYF) spent more than $3,500 on a one-day retreat for its board of directors last year that included a “Taste of the Chesapeake” lunch with oysters and crab cakes, according to documents obtained in a public information request by Spotlight on Maryland.
The revelation comes amid political turmoil for BCYF, which operates as a nonprofit guaranteed to receive Baltimore City taxpayer dollars each year, with $16 million in funding this year. The Baltimore City Council is set to debate a bill this week that would establish new oversight and regulations of BCYF — a debate escalated by a pending second report from the Baltimore City Inspector General on BCYF’s operations, set to be released in the new year.
Internal expenditure reports from BCYF reveal the nonprofit spent $3,625 on its “Winter Board Retreat” in January 2024 at the Canopy by Hilton Baltimore Harbor Point. The cost covered a rented meeting space, breakfast, lunch, valet parking and office supplies for 15 people.
