BREAKING UPDATE: Senate Invokes Cloture on Funding Plan Bringing Government One Step Closer to Opening

U.S. Senate chamber during a vote on H.R. 5371, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, showing senators and legislative staff.

UPDATES:

10:50 PM ET:
Cornyn arrived shortly after 10:45 pm to cast the final vote. The Motion to Invoke Cloture on the House-passed continuing resolution was passed on the 15th attempt by a vote of 60-40. Republicans plan to amend the bill and attach three full-year-long appropriations bills.

10:43 PM ET:
The vote has been ongoing for over an hour amid the absence of Senator John Cornyn.

GOP Rep. Wesley Hunt (TX) slammed Cornyn for “missing in action.” Cornyn reportedly was flying back from Texas and is still en route to the Capitol from Washington Dulles airport.

6:15 PM ET:
Per Politico, sources say the negotiated bill has “more than enough” Democrat support to invoke cloture. The Senate now stands in recess until 8 PM ET.
