A senior aide to Massachusetts Democrat Governor Maura Healey has been arrested in a cocaine trafficking operation that appears to have been run, at least in part, out of a state government office building.
According to court filings, 45-year-old LaMar Cook — a top aide to Governor Healey’s administration — was charged with trafficking cocaine after investigators discovered packages of drugs being delivered to Hotel UMass and the Springfield State Office Building. Federal authorities say Cook was involved in a distribution scheme that used government addresses as drop points, including one tied directly to the governor’s executive offices.
Cook served as deputy director of Healey’s Western Massachusetts office, according to an archived staff directory. A spokesperson for the governor’s office said state officials fired Cook “effectively immediately” after learning of his arrest Tuesday, Boston.com reported.
“The conduct that occurred here is unacceptable and represents a major breach of the public trust,” the spokesperson said. “This criminal investigation is ongoing, and our administration will work with law enforcement to assist them in their work.”
Governor Healey, an outspoken progressive who built her career on moralizing about “equity” and “justice,” now presides over a scandal that reeks of both hypocrisy and incompetence. Her administration has spent years chasing social media clout and “green” virtue signaling while the real rot has spread inside her own house. The press, predictably, will treat this as an isolated incident — a “tragic mistake” rather than a symptom of systemic moral collapse. But if a Republican governor’s aide were caught shipping cocaine into a state building, there would be wall-to-wall coverage, demands for resignation, and congressional investigations.
In this case, it appears that the evidence and visibility may make this story too juicy to ignore, though as of the time of this article’s publication only Fox News and CBS News have covered it among the major legacy news channels.
