October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to promote awareness, early detection, and support for those affected by breast cancer. This year, the Wicomico County Health Department’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) reaffirms its commitment to educating women on the Lower Eastern Shore about prevention, screening, and resources for care and survivorship.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. These figures underscore both the burden of breast cancer in our region and the critical need for early detection and access to care. Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the US, surpassed only by lung cancer. It is the leading cause of cancer death amongst non-Hispanic, Black women, and Hispanic women. Early detection, timely follow-up, and equitable access to screening and treatment dramatically improve outcomes. Because a significant number of cases in Wicomico County are detected at late stages, raising awareness locally and promoting screening participation-particularly among underserved population- is essential.
At the statewide level, the Maryland BCCP has served more than 87,000 women, providing mammograms, diagnostic follow up, and patient navigation services at no cost to eligible participants since its inception. Our goal is that no one in Wicomico County should delay or forgo breast cancer screening because of cost, lack of information, or fear. When breast cancer is detected early, the chances of effective treatment and survival increase dramatically.
Call to Action! We urge all residents -especially women aged 40 and older, or those with family history or other risk factors- to schedule regular mammograms and discuss breast health with their providers. If you are uninsured or underinsured, the BCCP may offer support for screening and follow-up services. Spread awareness by wearing pink on Friday, October 17th which is National Mammography Day!
