MARYLAND EXPERIENCING HEMORRHAGIC DISEASE OUTBREAK IN WHITE-TAILED DEER

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease has been confirmed in Maryland, and has likely caused the deaths for white-tailed deer in counties across the state. The largest outbreaks appear to be in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s counties. EHD typically occurs from mid-August through October and is caused by a virus that’s transmitted to deer through the bite of tiny flying midges. EHD is not transmitted between deer and cannot be spread to humans. The onset of freezing weather usually kills the midges that transmit the virus and ends the outbreak.
