New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, received a subpoena because of comments he made in February. These comments suggested he was housing an illegal immigrant in his home. This information comes from a report in the New York Times.
A few people who know about the situation told the newspaper that Alina Habba, the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, is investigating Murphy’s comments.
Two of those sources said that agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have tried to interview at least four witnesses about the comments. Another person added that the governor had been subpoenaed but not questioned.
Mr. Murphy said in February that he was prepared to house a woman whose immigration status was unclear at his family’s home in Middletown. F.B.I. agents have since sought to interview at least four witnesses in connection with the comments, two of the people said, with one adding that the governor had been subpoenaed but not questioned.
