New analysis shows Kirwan education plan to cost Maryland $1.6 billion more than expected

The education plan called Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, otherwise known as Kirwan, increases spending on Maryland public schools by $3.8 billion per year for the next 10 years.

It aims to expand access to pre-K and raises teacher pay. It also boosts specific spending on children experiencing poverty.

However, new legislative analysis has revealed an additional 110,000 students in that category, raising the cost of the plan by $1.6 billion over the next five years. Governor Wes Moore saying today something has to give.

“There has to be a smart and sober way of adjusting the numbers and the amount of students that have to be served,” Moore said.

Under the current spending formula passed by the legislature, unless taxes are increased or spending reduced, there will be a $1 billion deficit in four years. County leaders like Angela Alsobrooks in Prince George’s are already sounding the alarm.

  1. Not a big deal, We are spending 28 million on the Shorebirds stadium and another 9 million to face lift the dead Civic Center. Kirwan is going to put this county in the poor house but who cares as long as the teachers continue to get raises and pass there liberal Marxist agenda on to whoever has the stomach for it. As always just more money thrown at the inner city school systems which you might as well set fire too. This has been going on for almost 70 years with no improvement in nothing. Time for Musk to audit the Maryland school system.

    1. 6:18 – I’m with you on that. Average salary around here is what, 50-60k max and teachers want more on top of working a lot less than the rest of us, fully bennys and retirement. At what point does greed stop?

  2. 6:18 – you sound pretty concerned about the subject of stadiums. Just suppose you had the sole power to change things. What exactly would you do. Please try to be specific and not just say fire everybody, get rid of stadiums and remarks like that.

  3. President Trump is keeping his promises. MD is standing in the way but I believe he will win. If the illegals are removed from our education system we won’t need the BS Kirwan crap that is meant to benefit illegals. Praying for our President as he faces many enemies within our own country!
