Gov. Wes Moore announces updated plans for Baltimore’s Red Line east-west transit project

Declaring this a big moment for Baltimore, Gov. Wes Moore announced Friday that the Red Line will consist of light rail transit rather than a rapid bus line.

The governor provided the update Thursday evening on social media and at a news conference Friday morning.

The move fulfills a campaign promise he made to bring back the east-west Red Line transit project, which he relaunched in June 2023 after former Gov. Larry Hogan halted the project in 2015.

Leaders said expanding public transit in Baltimore, specifically the Red Line, is expected to make Baltimore more inclusive and equitable.

“Public transit is an instrument of freedom equity, environmental justice and the quality of life,” Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller said.

Red line construction is expected to create more than 5,000 jobs, and the anticipated economic growth is expected to generate billions of dollars.

“Today, we proudly announce that the new Baltimore Red Line will run on light rail transit,” Moore said.

The next phase of the project will be to establish a route — decisions must be made on whether it will be all above ground, include tunnels, and what neighborhoods it will go through.

  1. What a joke, What B S. Moore is such a loser and I am ashamed of my fellow Marylanders’ who actually voted for him. God please take care of Maryland and the US, we are in such trouble!
