Wicomico County Public Schools Plans to Redistrict

The Wicomico County Board of Education is planning to redistrict schools, starting with elementary in order to decrease class sizes. Many of the classrooms are over capacity by as much as 50% of the state’s recommended class size.

One thing the school district or news outlets are not saying is why the school system has to redistrict, and it’s not due to natural population growth over time. There has been an influx of immigrants that have been relocated to Wicomico County by the Biden Administration, with most being undocumented that are not here legally. A large portion are hispanic, but the majority of migrants are of Haitian descent.

In 1982, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in Plyler v. Doe that public schools must provide education to all students, regardless of their immigration status. This ruling ensures that migrant children who register in public school can attend.

Back in 1982, there wasn’t a mass flood of migrants illegally crossing the border like we have today. The system was designed to accommodate proper immigration and could handle a few that trickled through under normal circumstances.

Many people worry that providing education to undocumented children might negatively impact the learning opportunities for other students and could pose safety risks. Educating these children takes a considerable amount of resources, which can impact the overall learning environment. Challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, the need for additional school facilities, additional staff, and challenging student-to-teacher ratios are just a few of the obstacles that schools are currently facing.

  1. Hmmm. Take a look at the school districts directly around both Washington DC, Baltimore (city) and Annapolis. There are ENTRIE schools that have nearly 100% homogenous hispanic populations. Trump can’t get into office fast enough.

      1. It is like Snoopy wrapping a scarf around his neck and getting ready to battle the Red Barron.
55 MPH is just a suggestion. 75 – 80 MPH is the norm.

  2. Redistricting will solve nothing. With over 700 new students reporting to schools after the start date will only be met with more the same way next year. The Haitian ministers have found ways to bring in many more illegals than Hispanics and it’s not changing any time soon. Instead of putting our students through a lot of trauma, the schools should rent spaces just for these immigrant students and teach them some basics, like learning the language for starters.Of course we don’t have funding for this. Maybe the State will help us. Kidding. The Governors a Democrat.

  3. Posted about this a few months ago when my wife got a notice about it (she’s a teacher). It’s absolutely the influx of migrants, especially the drastic number of Haitians. They barely speak English. Why are we as tax payers funding their education, while they have government issued debit cards? There’s regularly a line of Haitians at the South Salisbury Wawa, standing at the ATM…what accounts do they all have to withdraw cash from?

Tom Homan…please clean this area up.

  4. Has illegal definition changed. Do elected officials by the people no longer represent the people? If they don’t, the need to legally get removed BY THE PEOPLE. Who can assist? Lawyers of course. Doesnt someone want to make a stance. Make a name for themselves to assist legally to remove all the trash in elected office.

    1. Been a poop hole since the 90s. That’s over 30 yrs. No change, same lack of common sense…..cant be saved. Nope…cant. Never ever….nope.
