Worcester opposes electrification mandates

Worcester County officials voiced their opposition to “devastating” state mandates that would force condos, hotels, shopping centers, and government buildings to meet future emissions standards by converting their power sources from fossil fuels to electricity.

“This could be devastating to businesses throughout the county that would have to change over from oil or natural gas to electric energy to run their buildings,” said District 7 Commissioner Joe Mitrecic. “The first-year fines would not be that bad, but they would escalate after that and cost a lot of money.”

Commissioners voted unanimously at their Oct. 1 meeting to send a strongly-worded letter opposing the measures.

Officials also expressed concern that enforcement of the statewide electrification requirements, being overseen by the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE), would be pushed to the local level.

“While some larger counties have existing programs and dedicated staff to handle this, Worcester does not,” wrote Chief Administrative Officer Weston Young in a memo to commissioners.

The county also will need to conduct a study to review the regulations and evaluate alternatives for conversion, including proposed penalties for non-compliance and an overall timeline to convert the affected buildings, Young noted in his memo.

  1. The mandate is outrageous, expensive, and unobtainable for some buildings. All current buildings should be exempt for this craziness. Actually it is totally insane to rely totally on electricity for anyone or any business.

  2. Green buildings ????
Less not forget how electricity is made. Oil, gas, coal, nuclear, hydro, And to a lesser effect, solar and wind.
It is already known that our current electrical grid can’t handle an influx of EV’s
All building are mostly run on electricity. It is their heating systems that these stupid mandates are mostly going after. Just like Biden wants to get rid of all appliances that use natural gas, propane or oil. ( this includes your heating system ) . During the summer all around this country we hear about rolling brown outs and black outs due to the electrical system not being able to handle the load. So why not add more load to an already overloaded system.
Remember when natural gas and propane were considered clean energy ??
    What happened to that ???
Can right coast California quit trying to be like left coast California ?? ( you see and read many of their failures on just about every mandate that these stupid democrats have put into place. )
Time to turn Maryland RED …..( maybe without Hogan )
