Attorney General Merrick Garland has taken a controversial stance on congressional subpoenas, refusing to comply with those he deems “illegitimate” while simultaneously jailing former Trump strategist Steve Bannon for the same offense.
The saga began earlier this year when Garland rebuffed several subpoenas issued by congressional committees investigating various matters, including the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
According to post shared by Jack Poso on Thursday, June 6, 2024, Garland argued that he was not obligated to comply with subpoenas that he felt were politically motivated or exceeded the legitimate oversight authority of Congress.
“The Department of Justice has a duty to protect the integrity of our legal processes and the independence of our law enforcement agencies,” Garland said in a statement. “We cannot simply acquiesce to demands that we believe are improper or unlawful.”
