Maryland Route 90 widening plans underway

Preliminary engineering work for a wider Route 90 corridor is underway.

Roughly a year after introducing the results of a Planning and Environmental Linkages study, Maryland State Highway Administration officials are moving on to the preliminary engineering phase of a planned redevelopment of the road. Media Relations Manager Shanteé Felix said public meetings will be held later this year as the administration proceeds with a National Environmental Policy Act study.

“The public will be involved throughout the process utilizing various public outreach tools, including virtual and in public meetings, as well as updates to the SHA Project Portal Page,” she said. “Initial outreach activities are anticipated for late summer/early fall 2024. The public comments will be considered with the full range of alternatives under consideration.”

For years, local officials in Ocean City and Worcester County have advocated for improvements to the Route 90 corridor, including an expansion of the current highway and its two bridges from two lanes to four. Officials have argued those changes would not only ease access in and out of the resort for members of the public but would improve travel for emergency service vehicles.

In August 2021, Gov. Larry Hogan announced funding would be included in the state’s Consolidated Transportation Plan for the planning phase of a Route 90 improvement project. As part of that effort, MDOT SHA initiated a PEL study to identify long-term transportation needs, including traffic operations, capacity, safety, economic development, pedestrian and bicyclist accessibility and emergency evacuations.

  1. I’m excited for the changes to finally occur. It sucks being stuck for an hour or more when there’s a blockage. Hopefully, the paint will be reflective so it can be seen in the rain unlike most of the roads on Delmarva.

  2. It would be wise to spend the money and make it 3 lanes in each direction now. The inevitable is coming. How about some real planning, not just for the current situation but the future as well.
