This City In Maryland Has Been Named The Most Miserable City In The State

Maryland is a state with various attractions, including the Chesapeake Bay, the National Aquarium, and the United States Naval Academy. However, not all of its cities are equally appealing to reside in. According to a recent research conducted by Zippia, a job reference website, Salisbury is the most unhappy city in Maryland.

How The Study Was Conducted

Zippia ranked Maryland cities based on nine criteria, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  • Percentage of college-educated inhabitants, average commuting time, and unemployment rate.
  • Cost of Living
  • Poverty Rate
  • Percentage of married inhabitants.
  • The percentage of residents without health insurance
  • Average weekly hours worked.
  • The percentage of people who are divorced

The survey granted each city a score for each category depending on how it fared against the state average. The higher the score, the gloomier the city. The points were then combined to get the final ranking.

Why is Salisbury the Most Miserable City in Maryland?

Salisbury, on Maryland’s eastern shore, with the highest misery index score of 40 points. The city has a population of around 33,000 and is the biggest in the region. However, it also boasts some of the poorest statistics in the state, including:

  • The state average is 39.9%, while just 23.6% of people hold a college degree.
  • The average travel time is 21.8 minutes, as opposed to the state average of 19.9 minutes.
  • The unemployment rate is 7.1%, whereas the state average is 4.1%.
  • The cost of living is 102.3, compared with the state average of 100.
  • The poverty rate is 28.6%, whereas the state average is 9.4%.
  • The state average is 49.2%, although only 34.9% of inhabitants are married.
  • 12.5% of inhabitants lack health insurance, compared to the state average of 6.1%.
  • The average number of hours worked per week is 38.4, whereas the state average is 37.6.
  • The state average is 10.1%, whereas 14.4% of inhabitants are divorced.

These characteristics show that Salisbury is a city with low educational attainment, considerable economic hardship, low social cohesiveness, and poor health outcomes.

How Salisbury Can Improve Its Situation

Salisbury is not destined to remain unpleasant indefinitely. The city and its citizens may improve their status by taking the following steps:

      1. Democrats need to be Prosecuted for Waisting OUR Taxpayer Money $$$$ !!! Like the new
Tall Building Down Town / Bike Lanes / Turn-abouts !!!!!! In Da Bury MD !!!! 21801

  1. Years in the making . . . From your liberal government.

Jobs here do not pay a livable wage, which disqualifies most for these ridiculous rents, as you see more and more homeless and illegals.

Decades ago there was an opportunity to be great while all the born here’s whined about fearing change.

You are now officially a shit hole with 30% poverty.

Instead of bringing more indusrty here , your government is focused on HUD. Ensuring you stay in poverty. Smh

Your government is a massive failure.

  2. Living in the city of Salisbury for 53 years now I can tell you since Jake Day became our mayor and the current things are worse. When Barrie Tilghman was mayor & Ireton things were better the city was cleaner there were city inspectors that kept things in check. The SPD had a Chief that cared and a city council that was active. It all worked. There is the answer now it is a failure.

  3. How’s SU going to spin this in their promotional brochures?

Shootings, robberies, and homeless on every corner.

Are you blind? Heads in the sand? You needed a national article to wake you up to the condition of your town?

    1. Need to Remove SU Frisbies from OUR COUNTY PARK at Schumaker South by the pond !!!!!
College has $$$$ to get their own park for that & they are a BIG Nuisance to the rest of us who
have a right to use this park who live here & walk our dogs there !!!! Frisbies flying AT US is not
FAIR & the college has no right to take over OUR County Park that has been here for YEARS !!!!

      1. Wow! You must have a great life if frisbees are the worst things you have to complain about. That park is in the County otherwise…not the City’s problem. Besides that, I agree with you that Salisbury is a dump for the most part. Unfortunately it is illegal to do what must be done to fix the problem.

        1. I use to jog at the park with one of my dogs in the evening on side streets and north and south park roads..

Local thugs let their pit bulls loose on you, and my dog and I would take evasive action to include using mace, and striking the pit bulls with the length of my dog leash.

Salisbury Park is over run with hoodlums and after midnight , and police take little action.
These wanna be gangsters drive no tag Motorcycles up and down the park roads and side streets.

On one side street by the park, a fat white dude will chase after you in his beat up bronco
( broken muffler) , and threaten you with physical abuse bc your white, and he has black friends.

NAH, you all can have Salisbury Park aka Black-Berry Park

          1. COUNTY needs to LIGHT UP the Parking LOT & have POLICE stop by Every Day &
Night to chase Out the Riff Raff !!!!! Schumaker South by the Pond !! Da Bury !!!!

            SOLVED !!!!

          2. it is used by Drug Dealers & Hookers because it is NOT lit up after Dark !!! DUGH !
Put up some damn lites !! solved

          1. They probably had NO VOTE on the Frisbies being installed at Schumaker so
look into that & Get them REMOVED !!!!

They have tried to SNEAK them in recently at other locations who don’t want them !

          2. Taxpayers should get to VOTE to get Frisbies OUT !!!! SU has Plenty of $$$$$$
to build their OWN somewhere FAR Away !!!!!!

        2. 3:25 pm We neighbors who live HERE & Pay Taxes have the Priority over YOU outsiders & SU over this County PARK at Schumaker South !!!!! County Park is for
Everyone except Frisbies hogging it up for their Selfish selves installing those Pesky
Frisbie Traps all over OUR PARK !!!!! The college can go ELSEWHERE !!! GET OUT !!!

  4. Salisbury became the pit during Jake Day’s 2 terms and the new one is just sticking to the same. I have lived in the city here for 53 years and it is deplorable since Day high crime shootings, breakins, child rapists and drug traffic on these streets and NO not talking Baltimore. A new Chief of police no better than Duncan no return calls no enforcement of noise ordinance after mid nite. Zero response and they probably will continue the City Festivals of drunks crossing into our streets. And where are the city inspectors worse slum houses than the Bronx in NY. I offer an invitation to ride these streets look for yourself. Check out Vine Street across from the Salvation Army and the corner of Jackson & Lincoln Ave bring your cameras. Count the boarded up houses falling down. News media please come with cameras and air in on the news. Stop slum city and return it to what was PLEASE.

  5. I think we can all agree Jake Day was a disgraceful mayor, and did dumbass things to promote his career for the libtards across the bridge. And it worked. When ever you see a roundabout drive right over it close to the middle. Once it starts breaking up they will remove it rather than fix it. But do be aware of the speed bumps all over town. You go to fast and your ball joints will suffer. He did an amazing job of screwing up, a once pretty good town. A political pos for sure.

  6. and what are you so called concerned citizens doing about it? nothing!
sit around and bitch! how about storming the Bastille and demanding action? naw, never happen! look at your schools, you have given your most precious children over to those who will enslave them for the rest of their lives! might have been better for them if you were never born! enjoy your decent into hell!

  7. at least we have beautiful rainbow crosswalks and gorgeous gay pride parades. its wonderful to live in a city where homosexuality and crime are strongly encouraged.

  8. Govt Never puts up stop lights were needed !!!!! Snow Hill Rd & Johnson Rd corner / Tilghman Rd & Mt Herman Rd corner / and they have too many were NOT needed !!!! IDIOTS

  9. TAXES & Water-Sewer -Trash Bill WAY TOO HIGH in Salisbury MD !!!! Not Affordable !!! $100 month appx
    Not counting TAXES !!!!

    1. Salisbury taxpayers will be paying for Barry Tilghman’s $180,000,000 (and counting) sewage debacle for at least several more decades through rising sewer costs, currently billed at over twice the water rate. It still isn’t finish after it was deemed a disaster over 20 years ago by the state (costing huge fines for millions of gallons of river contamination) and still isn’t fully completed.

      1. I TESTIFIED AGAINST MA GEEEN, KIMBALL, ASST WARDEN WILLIAMS, CAPT PETRIE, CAPTAIN INKROTE,
        and
RITCHIE , ( who by the way , Ritchie bought property and a boat off inmates in housing unit 4 ) ,
I also testified against other corrupt/drug involved officers there too.

ECI never forgave me, and held me down in rank for more than 20 years.

Assistant WARDEN WILLIAMS is doing 30 years in the Federal Penn, Kimball was fired, everyone else to include Ma Green were reprimanded.

If the local public only knew what the hell goes on at ECI… they would call their Senators @ 202 224 3121 and complain.

After I got the hell out of there ; 25 years working prisons in Maryland, and opened up ECI in 1987, I heard ECI is still in the gutter.
