A Police Hiring Crisis Is Gripping U.S. Cities And Towns

Some small towns are simply closing their police forces.

From big cities to small towns across the country, America is facing a police officer shortage.

To blame is a mass exodus from police departments over the last several years, along with difficulty hiring new officers.

Many in law enforcement say departments are suffering from flagging morale thanks to a wave of anti-police sentiment that peaked with the police killing of George Floyd in 2020. In some cases, city councils slashed police budgets, leaving some police chiefs feeling abandoned as they are stretched thin trying to keep residents safe.

Resignations among cops were up 47% last year over 2019, and retirements were up 19% among 200 police forces surveyed by the Police Executive Research Forum.

While large cities are forced to plod along with smaller departments, some small towns are giving up and simply shuttering their police forces.

  1. If you think the police are here to “Serve and Protect” you, you are delusional. They are here to protect the government. Anyone else remember when Barrie Tilghman’s daughter “assaulted” City Councilwoman Rachel Polk? Chief of Police Webster, who was present, did his best Sgt. Shultz impersonation: “I see nothing!”. Outside of sheriffs, law enforcement officials are “selected”, not elected. They are in office to serve their “selectors”, not the electorate (think Barbara Duncan). Protect yourself and serve the Lord!

    1. The vast majority of police are NOT like what you describe. Like any profession, there are unscrupulous people that are attracted by power, control, wealth, whatever it is (certainly not wealth for police)…Now if you were talking about the “alphabet” agencies, I would agree with you a bit more, but again, the rank and file are pretty much OK…it’s the one that have the most power that are the bad apples, so to speak. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

  2. It used to be one of the few jobs young Veterans qualified and welcome to do but now they all have PTSD and collect disability.

  3. Gee, I just wonder why nobody wants to be a police anymore! Their hands are tied . They get sued if they look cross eyed at a crook. They are accused of racism if they manhandle a thug. Who in their right mind would want that job?

  4. government wants needs marshall law. this is the how and why, lots of illegals, disrespect of laws, no kops! rioting mayhem etc. time for you to give up your guns so the government can protect you! create the problem then offer the solution! lovely!

  5. When we elect folks who are not worthy and they start dictating what LEOs can and cannot do, this is the end result. The inability to replenish a police force with quality candidates. The govt has also done it with our military, by lessening incentives (health care, retirement, education credits) in hopes to save money. That has caused not hitting recruitmenf goals fof the services and stretching thin them members we do have around the world.

When playing on a computer can net you a high 5 figure salary (with benefits), a new growing pot industry, remaining lazy off the tit of the taxpayer and selling illegal.drugs for gobs of money…

Of course their are shortages in all major industry help and protection services.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Joey…..CONgress amd our local govts.

    Sad indeed.

    1. Literally zero states defunded their police. Most major cities INCREASED police budgets in response. NYC spends nearly 30 million dollars per day on the NYPD to stand around and watch videos on their phones.
