While On The Subject Of Assateague Island…

When you do come to (Ocean City/Assateague Island) please try to consider others. Locals tend to arrive early to the beach before the tourons arrive and take over. Nowadays they arrive with big tents and umbrellas and set up right in front of you. My wish is that officials would simply make a rule that if you are going to set up such items that obstruct pretty much everyone’s beautiful view they should be required to set up at least 50 yards from the ocean.

What are your thoughts?

  1. My anti social pipe dream would be to drive the beach with a large piece of machinery that scoops up all the encampments and dump them in a secured lot where their owners have to pay to get their belongings out of hock. Heck, I’d even do it for nothing just to see the looks on the faces of those who thought they ‘saved’ their space only to find everything removed!

  2. Beaching has just become ridiculous. We used to take an army blanket a picket basket a Coleman jug of ice water and fish near dusk and bring home a fish to scale and fry. People drag all this shit and tents etc. onto the beach FOR WHAT?

  3. Good suggestion. Mark areas with Bright Orange flags to denote no further access forward other that acceptable beach umbrellas.

  4. I just left the beach / some guy was setting up camp about 8:30 – I asked him if he was sticking around as it wasn’t very polite to set up like that and leave. He had some very nice words to share with me. He left and I waited an hour. Then, I collected his things and dragged them to the back of the beach as I left. Hope he has a nice day.

  5. “We used to”
That’s silly to compare what you use to take to the beach and complain about what others take now. What difference does it make to you what others take. And who cares when others set up their things at the beach? Just find a place and and enjoy it. The sun is stronger now. People try to relax at the beach out of the harmful ray of the sun more so now than as ‘back in the day’ when we just took a towel and a bottle of Baby Oil mixed with iodine. Now we see ourselves at the dermatologist office more than not. My family bought a pop up to use at the beach. We could all enjoy the beach in the shade. Now they are being banned at a lot of beaches because of complaints about the view. I garrantee if we set up all the umbrellas that we need it would block more of the ocean view than our ‘pop up’.. Ask the people that have been struck by an umbrella as they blew along beach in the wind which they would prefer. 🤔
So go to the beach with what YOU want to take. Take in a breath of ocean air. Plop down in any open spot and enjoy your day. 😉🌊

  6. Usually why when we’re on the OSV beach, we’ll drive at least 5 miles down the beach and get far away from the crowds.

  7. 12:16 – we are talking about people who set up all sorts of stuff, leave to go eat breakfast and return hours later after blocking off a chunk of beach.

  8. Driving out on Assateague is the best way to beach it! No one cares if you use a tent or how big it is.
We have found that a large canopy helps keep everyone cooler & the children are given extra protection from the sun.
If you’re on a larger more populated beach, establishing rules of setbacks would be most helpful. Only problem is WHO would have to enforce them!?

    1. It should be common courtesy. I get to the beach very early in the morning and get what I believe is a great spot. It’s not just about getting into the ocean and or getting sun, it’s about the incredible view. The next thing you know the tourons start arriving and start setting up literal overnight tents right in front of the very people that got there early. The way I see it is, if you are going to put up these tents and covers, do so in the back area of the beach so you don’t block the view. On Assateague you are still not very far from the water. Just my two cents.
