Resort Officials Talk Recreational Cannabis Use, Police Enforcement

OCEAN CITY – Officials say the legalization of recreational cannabis has had some effect on the number of weapons arrests and substance violations reported in Ocean City last month.

On Monday, Ocean City Police Chief Ross Buzzuro presented members of the Ocean City Police Commission with an update on police activity for the month of July. With the legalization of recreational cannabis taking effect July 1, Buzzuro reported the number of controlled dangerous substance (CDS) violations had decreased from 139 last year to 22 this year, while drug citations decreased from 79 to one.

“We know that is the change in the cannabis law,” he said.

Buzzuro also noted that DUI arrests had increased from 27 to 50, while weapons arrests had decreased from 67 to 24. Council President Matt James, commission member, questioned if weapons arrests correlated with drug citations.

“Weapons arrests are significantly down,” he said. “Do you think that’s because of the drug citations?”

  1. Govt can’t have it Both ways !!!! You want the TAX $$$$ from the drugs That’s WHY you made it Legal !!!

So leave people alone then & No arrests or prosecutions for the Drugs YOU allow to be sold !!!!

  2. My family and I were back in Salisbury for business about a month ago. We planned to take a day trip to the inlet. My 7 & 9 year old daughters asked what the horrible smell was. 4 guys in the next lane over, a couple cars down, all huddled smoking the reefer. We left and went to Assateague. Much nicer environment and no skunk. OC Council needs to take notice that the family resort just keeps getting further and further away from what it once was. CDS violations and drug citations down? No surprise there. Democratic state that’s soft on criminals, why would the police be proactive? Maryland, you reap what you sow.

  3. Are you fing nuts… MD is libtard marxist democrat state ….thats against freedoms..oc has never been pure family fun.
Smoking bans for outdoors and most hotels I would give that fecal city 1 dime.

I hope they start opening up places people can relax and enjoy smoking just like the bars do with booze..a WAY BIGGER KILLER THEN WEED.

Best solution MOVE OUT OF MD

    1. 5:00 – Well, stay home then sport. While OC has its problems, waking up and looking at the ocean every day is not one of them. You do you- go move and have a nice life.

  4. Pretty sure almost all weed use from then to now has been recreational. Guessing job paying someone to smoke would be filled almost instantly.

What’s new is greedy politicians throwing any scruples out the window in pursuit of a buck regardless of the short and long term consequences for the greater society. Cigarettes bad, bad, bad; taxed reefer is mellow, man.

What’s next? Licensing hookers and having them bill hours using lawyers watches?

    Shakes head sadly.
