More Americans took their own lives in the last year than ever before, according to national data.
Figures published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that 49,500 adults in the US committed suicide in 2022, driven by access to guns and increased rates of depression.
The data suggests that suicides are now more common in the US than at any time since World War II.
It’s a rise from 48,200 in 2021, which adds up to one death every 11 minutes.
Suicide is now the eleventh-leading cause of death in the US, compared to 2020 when it was the twelfth-leading cause. It’s also the second-leading cause of death among people aged 10 through 34.

Many many American are in desperation now and see no way out. Prices have risen so high working people can’t afford to pay rent or a mortgage, food, heating fuel, electric bills, health insurance, car insurance, car payment, and things break and need repairing or replacing. The list goes on and on. Rising income for the few that get raises has not even come close to keeping up with the rate of inflation we are seeing. Then factor in the political state we are currently facing. The climb in suicides has absolutely nothing to do with the availability of guns. Society is breaking down do to democratic policies. Conversation over

Could/can it be argued that with fewer guns there would be fewer suicides – probably, but that doesn’t address the root cause of suicides/suicidal ideation. In many circumstances, we don’t know the reason(s), but certainly mounting stressors and unmet mental health needs are the primary factors. The ongoing political climate along with social media prevalence certainly exacerbate this.
