Delays Expected As Rt. 90 Project Nears

OCEAN CITY – Officials report that motorists can expect travel delays in the coming weeks as work begins on a portion of the Route 90 bridge.

On Wednesday, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration announced it will begin a project to clean and paint the structural steel beams on the Route 90 bridge over the Norfolk-Southern Railroad, near the Route 113 interchange in Berlin.

Work will begin Monday, Aug. 14, and conclude by mid-September, weather permitting.

“This project is part of the State Highway Administration’s bridge preservation program and will help to preserve and extend the service life of State Highway Administration bridges,” a news release states. “Cleaning and painting the bridges preserves existing steel sections and protects them from corrosion which could cause expensive and time-consuming repairs and bridge closures in the future.”

Beginning Monday, work will start on the westbound side of Route 90. All cleaning and painting equipment will be staged on the 11-foot westbound shoulder on the bridge.

  1. Gotta hurry up and get it done before ocean’s calling or whatever that thing is called – meanwhile traffic will be jacked up everywhere. The best time to do this project IS in October, but we can’t have that happen as OC has to plan a money maker EVERY FREAKIN’ WEEKEND OF THE YEAR!

  2. Neither of the Route 90 BRIDGES will be worked on. Its the OVERPASSES…from 113 to 589.

Bethany should….no…STEVE (editor) at the Dispatch should know better.

Its a non issue since its offseason. That 1 mile.stretch from route 90 west to route 50 exit was an SHA show. Redid the middle of the road only, with drunk men spraying temp line markers. That crap wasnt fixed for 1 week.

The island is MDs cash cow during the summer months….politicos on the island amd those representing us in Annapolis need to demand better respect from SHA.

Zero work from mid may until mid Sept, unless an emergency…period. i dont care that most work is done during warmer months. Change the midset…we are almost 24 years into the 21st century. Past practice is no longer relevant, especially in MDs only public beach along the atlantic. A NATIONAL park doesnt count….

  3. WELD the south bridge SHUT for Good !!!! No Need to ever open it & disrupt traffic for a Damn Boat which
should be made to stay on the SOUTH side of the bridge !!!!

Opening bridges should be a thing of the PAST !!! Used ONLY in an Emergency !!!!
