The Wicomico County Council held a budget session with Wicomico County Public Schools on May 17, 2023. When discussing the the school district’s request of nearly 1.5 million dollars in extra funding aside from the standard budget, Wicomico County Councilman Joe Holloway brought up a great question. He asked Micah Stauffer, Superintendent of Wicomico County Public Schools about the sexually explicit books that are found throughout the county’s school media centers. The Superintendent acknowledged that, and admitted that not all purchased books have been read or screened. Stauffer then mentioned that there is a process for removing them.
One thing that Stauffer failed to address is that there should not be a lengthy process for the removal of a book if it was illegitimately brought into the school without going through the proper screening measures that were already in place. By design, administration clearly wants to ignore the process by purchasing anything without accountability, but have a process that suddenly matters when it comes to the removal of inappropriate books using a difficult and lengthy process that is designed to obstruct.
Stauffer then goes on to make excuses to say that the Media Specialists don’t read all of the books that they order. It is interesting how the Media Specialists know which books to feature and showcase on top of the media center bookshelves when students walk in, which many are inappropriate. The Media Specialists know darn well what is in those books. The Media Specialists belong to the American Library Association, which has become a compromised clearinghouse of political activism who are no longer about reading. The American Library Association puts out regular newsletters and announcements on how to push back against parents as to which controversial books to feature, a banned book list, and which ones to feature in school media centers during “Banned Book Week.”
The Media Specialists know very well of the innapropriate books, and they defiantly see how far they can push the envelope while partaking in the political activism. These books are categorized as “Young Adult,” which is for age 18+. There is not one excuse that Stauffer can make for Media Specialists who are paid to select appropriate education materials for the media center. In response to Holloway, Stauffer is delicately navigating the facts, while also protecting the agenda of the house through manipulative interference.

The Council should have asked to see written process/procedure for reviewing books. The Superintendent was making up the whole process!
Why didn’t and Councilmembers ask how long the process takes to review a book or ask for most recent example of book that got removed.
The comment about laughing in background is total BS… I’m sure they were in conversation about something else or how the Superintendent was side-stepping the question.

I am so tired of these employees acting on their own behalf and nothing happens. they ignore the policies and rules and do what they want. the whole bunch of them needs to be fired, no more money for these ya hoos.
There’s a very simple way to settle this. There’s simply no reason for our school kids — of ANY age — to read any book except the Holy Bible. Problem solved!
