The great Covid rip off: US government dished out $5.4BILLION in aid to almost 70,000 small businesses using bogus social security numbers during the pandemic, watchdog finds

The US government dished out an eye-watering $5.4billion in Covid relief to small businesses with dubious Social Security numbers, a federal watchdog has said.

The Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PRAC), the top watchdog overseeing stimulus spending, said it identified 69,323 ‘questionable’ Social Security Numbers (SSNs) used to obtain the loans.

It is just the latest damning indictment of the mammoth Washington rip-off in which fraudsters stole an estimated $45.6billion in unemployment benefits during Covid thanks to the government’s naivety at the start of the pandemic.

The alleged con targeted the Paycheck Protection Program, known as PPP, and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan, the EIDL.
