The word drag as a twist on the “grand rag” term of late-19th century European masquerade balls referred to male actors dressed as women. Drag has since developed its own culture, practice, and yes, work, with crossover from vernacular roots to popular culture and firm connections to visibility and equal rights movements of LGBTQ+ communities in the U.S. With performers calling upon a unique multilayered system of language, costumes, and varied performance styles ranging from the acrobatic to pageantry, from live singing to satire and comedic commentary, mastering such practices can take years–with some styles passed down generationally, or among performers. Only when a performer’s style is molded into a distinct look, name, and persona are they crowned as queens or kings.

Oh yes we have the round abouts, painted sidewalks in rainbow colors he did, the painted bike walks that no one uses. The planters in the streets in the New Town area that are a maze to get down. The little blue things in the streets that were to mark where fire hydrants were and the fence he tore down around the river so drunks and children call fall into the oil, slum soaked Wicomico River that he was to have dredged. And don’t forget the tearing down all chain link fences in the city, but not the rusted ones around the Elks Gulf Club. Why anyone would want to come here for a pretend festival of gays and immigrants explain to us the citizens. It’s just a FAKE JAKE party I would advise everyone find somewhere else to be take a trip to a real festival or see the sights on the shore and avoid Salisbury. The food is better and so is the atmosphere and historical towns like Berlin, Crisfield, take a cruise to Tangier Island and visit Ocean City. Enjoy the really nice sights.
