(The Hill) — The United States Postal Service (USPS) on Thursday proposed raising prices ahead of its peak season, a temporary adjustment it says will help handle the holidays.
Rates for priority mail, first-class services and ground shipping would increase by as little as 25 cents in some cases, and as much as $6.50 in others, according to a release.
The temporary increase, now pending approval by the Postal Regulatory Commission, would be in effect from Oct. 2 through Jan. 23.
The price hike would be part of the Postal Service’s 10-year plan to avoid some $160 billion in projected losses.
President Biden signed into law a reform bill for the USPS, a response to concerns that the mail-carrying service was operating at such a loss that it risked running out of funds by 2024.
The legislation eliminated a requirement that USPS pre-fund employees’ retiree health benefits, taking down what was a significant financial burden for the service.
I used to support the United States Postal Service, but have had a change in thoughts over the past two years. After having to pay multiple late fees on my monthly bills, that very mailed in a very timely manner, I will state that I think lots of postal workers are over paid. Reports of piles of mail sitting in storage for weeks and piles of mail found dumped in remote areas has caused me to rethink my options of paying monthly bills.
Key line in the entire story: “The price hike would be part of the Postal Service’s 10-year plan to avoid some $160 billion in projected losses.”
USPS has a crystal ball now and can accurately project their losses? I thought there was never a need to project since historically every year they need a bail out! (insert laugh track)
Its been 21 years since 9/11/2001 with the aftermath of having anthrax issues via the USPS. FedEx, DHL, others, then Amazon, ebay, etc with people shifting. A smart mind kicked around USPS going 5 days a week for mail and using Sat/Sun for special delivery. That 5 days a week as well as pending retirements would be an institutional change.
Now we are in our roaring 20’s. USPS still 6 days a week regular delivery, Sunday only express, wanting to change their truck fleet to EVs and now a needed price increase to handle the holidays. Must be nice to know Congress will always…always bail you out – YET, you never receive a budget from Congress!!!!!
Also, glad to learn that the holidays now start on October 2nd and end Jan 23rd.
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHA Holiday season will be lacking since supplies are low and so is money in peoples pockets. Good luck with outlook!
Look at the Proud of time for these increased rates: October through January. This is yet another salvo in the War On Christmas!!
Well Christmas should actually be in September, but what do I know. As for the rates how about dumping Amazon and everything else that has to get there the next day and you won’t need any rate hikes. As for the rate hike they used to take place about twice a year so this is just their usual rate hike and the Stores all know how to get around it, unfortunately the consumer was never told how to avoid them and is the only one that gets stuck with them. Solution stop buying online and kill all their sales, shop locally which in our case is pretty impossible since our Asshole Mayor has seemed to let everything leave town and now we get of all things an Outlet Grocery Store that one should be real interesting, nothing like day old crap and out of date canned goods. Thanks for nothing, hope you enjoy the kickback you all got.
The United States Postal Service is just what it is called, a service. It was never meant to be profitable.
Should SLASH overpriced prices in HALF !!!!! GOUGING USPS
They have to Pay for the Democrat Late Ballot deliverys on the upcoming elections like 2020 !!!!!
So Democrats can CHEAT again !!!!! FACT
