Driver ‘X’: NY issues its first gender neutral motor vehicle licenses

The New York state Department of Motor Vehicles issued its first gender neutral driver’s licenses Friday that allow people to mark “X” rather than male or female under a new state law that officially takes effect June 24.

“Every person, regardless of their gender identity or expression, deserves to have an identity document that reflects who they are,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a press release.

State lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the Gender Recognition Act last year allowing the “X” option on driver’s licenses, learner’s permits and non-driver ID cards.

A Friday Tweet by the DMV highlighted the people receiving the first batch of X-marked IDs.

The new law will also remove the requirement that people post notification in newspapers about court petitions to change their names.

Advocates say that part of the new law will allow them to avoid discrimination and harassment by keeping personal details like their previous names, birthplace, address out of the public eye.

“It’s a really great gift to the community for Pride [month],” state Sen. Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan), who sponsored the bill along with Assembly Member Danny O’Donnell (D-Manhattan).

  1. Went to MVA in Salisbury last Thursday to renew my drivers license at my pre-scheduled appointment time. I took my birth certificate, original social security card, and two pieces of unopened mail (electric bill & phone bill) with my current address showing through the envelope windows, which matches the address on the license and will be expiring next month. I handed the required documents to the line worker at station twelve. She examined them and then asked me “Do you want to open these pieces of mail or do you want me to open them”. I asked why she needed to see inside since my name and address are clearly visible on these unopened envelopes, proving they had not been tampered with. Her answer was, “the envelopes won’t fit in the scanner”. My opinion is that the MD MVA has no need to know my account numbers or my monthly cost for these services or any other payments I make, which I made known to a blank stare. If I had a clue this was going to be the procedure the MVA uses, I would have taken them some junk mail, which I get plenty of, for them to scan and save in my file. I realize I could have reschedule but didn’t want to take more time off for these MVA games.
