A full 85% of students in Maryland are not proficient in math, in large part due to the COVID-19 shutdowns of the past two years.
Fox Baltimore reported that results from recent state test scores revealed the “stunning amount of learning loss,” a prediction the outlet said experts made during the pandemic that has now come true. Fox reported:
The pandemic created a debate over education. On one side, some parents, and Baltimore City Schools CEO Sonja Santelises, were saying students need to be learning in person.
“The gap is getting wider,” Amy Adams, a parent in Baltimore County, told Project Baltimore back in October 2020.
“We are not raising the bar. We are lowering the bar,” added Sara Russell, another parent in Baltimore County who spoke with Fox45 News in 2020.
During a news conference in January 2021, Santelises supported a return to the classroom, saying “To ignore that — we do have families that want an in-person option — would be irresponsible.”
But on the other side of the debate, were the teachers’ unions and those fighting to keep learning virtual.
“We don’t want anyone forced back into buildings until it’s safe,” Diamonte Brown, the president of the Baltimore Teachers Union, said back in July 2021.
It appears the harm done to students by closing down schools is now apparent, with the scores from the 2021 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program – the first standardized state tests students have taken since the beginning of the pandemic – showing dire numbers in proficiency.
The test difficulty was even reduced for students, who took a shorter test in the fall that was for a grade level below their current grade. Even that didn’t improve scores.
Probably about the same amount have deficient communications skills!
They’ll axe you pacific questions though!
oh no you di’int!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that 85% including those students who were already performing near and at the bottom pre-COVID?
Remember that many of those schools have fewer than 5% graduate with only nominal proficiency in math and English, while the other 95% “graduate” with poor math and English skills.
They never were- public schools make stupid people and are designed to make stupid people. We are just noticing more- that’s all. They cannot be saved.. No teachers are good people. Pull your children out, now.
Pull them out an place them where? Will you pay for private school?
Hmmm…. “No teachers are good people.” Eh?
Judge much?
I certainly could agree with “some” but “all” is a bit much, but since we are on the subject, you could always go to college and earn the degree and certifications and then pitch in to fix this mess – that way (due to your logic) there would be “one good person” right?
….good luck with that
These numbers include Baltimore City, special education students and students of a foreign language. Let us see the numbers for Wicomico County?
Oh we’ll. Your as dumb as you want to be. Not the systems problem.
Can’t blame it all on Covid,. Unqualified teachers is the main reason.
No- stand by what I said. The public school system is evil. It always was and always will be. It was set up not to teach children, but to make complaint little drones- hence your smug little reaction. And the idiots who have “education” degrees are precisely the problem- all that degree means is that you have been properly indoctrinated into Marxist dogma. If you teach- quit. If you have kids, homeschool.
