Just as the state of Maryland is going through a redistricting session, Wicomico County is up for redistricting as well. The majority Republican council each selected one applicant for appointment; three Republicans, two Democrats and two Independents were chosen for the redistricting committee. The purpose of the redistricting committee is to ensure that ALL citizens are equally represented throughout the county. Aside from the designated Minority District, race is not a determining factor on whether a citizen has a voice in government or not.
On Tuesday evening, October 19, 2021, the committee held its fourth meeting at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center at 6pm. The meeting started in an orderly fashion, but tensions arose when a specific member of the committee repeatedly reiterated his racially driven opinions.
Vice Chair Mr. Mark Danderson, an SU professor who was nominated to the committee by Wicomico Councilman Josh Hastings, showed his personal bias with racial slurs such as “White Hebron,” referring to the population percentages in the Wicomico County town. This is a clear violation of the Wicomico County Charter as Mr. Danderson continually rebukes the county’s legal advisor. He goes on to speak for the black community by stating, “they feel completely underrepresented” with no means of data or primary sources to support his claim.
The video below reveals Mr. Danderson’s obsession with race, which he tries to hijack the committee in order to control the narrative.
During another meeting, it was discussed that the black population is underrepresented with only one district. One committee member spoke up and reminded the committee that anyone is able to run for the “At Large” seats within the council. Dr. Kel Nagle, a local physician who was nominated to the committee by Wicomico Councilman Bill McCain, comments that a minority has no chance of winning an At Large elected seat. Per the council, there are no requirements for race or gender in filing for candidacy.
Pull out the faithful old race card when all else fails.
This pompous, privileged asshole needs to be removed. These academics all think they have the right to punch down on everyone else. He needs a good throat punch.
Detroit, Baltimore, Oakland – just a few cities represented by their population – yet…………………………
Not surprised by Danderson and Nagle comments
That is what you get from liberals —racist opinions
Dr Nagle should apologize for his statement that no minority has a chance of
Winning an At Large elected seat. Pure Racist comment by him!
White Hebron?
FYI. The current President of the Commissions of Hebron is a minority and female.
What the heck? The arrogance and ignorance of this racist faculty from SU is repulsive. I hope districts are not created by the beat of that drum…..
When do we get to the point when we’re at the “Taxation without Representation” level?
It is time to “break the magic spell” of SU. A diploma used to mean something. It meant that your were a member of an elite group of people who passed some difficult barriers. Now- let’s be honest, anyone who goes to college is getting a diploma. They used to be taught history, Latin, civics- now they learn…well, what exactly? A college degree is a scam- nothing more than a piece of useless paper.
Salisbury University is going to go away soon- as soon as people realize that college is not worth it.
What does it take to remove a known racist from the committee? Danderson needs to be removed immediately.
Notice despite a minority district the council still has no minority rep. Sounds like the minority population does care enough to run or vote so they have already expressed their position.
Are these RACIST that are pushing race telling us there are no guidelines they have to go by for redistricting and they can makeup and / or change the rules to push their LIBERAL / MARXIST agenda.
Josh Hastings set in my living room and said one thing and when he got elected he did the DEMOCRAT flip flop and has been contradicting what he stated in my living room. In other plain words he lied to me and still lying just like a LIBERAL
Those that come here to study don’t stay and our own that study there leave. There are few opportunities here even tradespeople plumbers contractors and HVAC workers who can’t afford rent or to start a young family staying close to their families.
Defund SU it creates racist morons.
Wicomico County is home to about 100K people. We are born male or female, and our DNA is a gift from our parents. Most will not aspire to elected office of any sort, but the district maps should be as compact as possible following natural and political boundaries, and with roughly equal population. Then let voters choose who they best feel will represent the general good and their specific priorities. It won’t be perfect but it will be representative.
Districts drawn to favor or disfavor any particular subset of the population are inherently wrong because they gut our concept of ‘one man, one vote’. And they are an insult to the favored group because the clear inference is that absent the finagling no member of that group could be elected on their merits.
We’ve strayed a good bit from Dr. King’s eloquent and succinct wish that his children (and our collective children) be judged on their character and accomplishments. We need to retrace our steps to make his wish come true. Don’t let the dividers prevail.
First, the existence of a “Minority District” is racist at it’s root and should not exist! Has no one heard of a grid? Just draw equally spaced horizontal lines, then verticals in between by equal population per box for the number of districts needed/ desired.
There.
Fixed Ya!!
In today’s society:
Being logical is discrimination.
Being illogical is crazy.
Also the first US Passport was issued with a gender identification of “X”
No one wins, ever.
It does not surprise me that Dr. Danderson was nominated by ajaosh Hastings who is part of the progressive movement here on the lower shore. I f you voted for him then you deserve what you got. How long has this SU.professor lived here?? Does he even know where some of these neighborhoods are?
