Are you sure your kid can read? All too many US public schools won’t tell you the truth

We ask that question of any parent whose child attends a city Department of Education school and more broadly of families (especially urban ones) all across the nation. And not just elementary-school children, but even middle- and high-schoolers.

Because all too many public schools not only fail to teach basic skills; they promote students with decent grades without ever alerting families to how bad things really are. If there was a silver lining to the sick farce of remote learning this last year and a half, it was that it forced many parents to get more involved in their children’s education. And lots and lots of them woke up to the horrible truth.

This is one reason, as we noted recently, that some 1.5 million families have pulled their children from the public schools in the wake of COVID. Many went to charter public schools; others to Catholic or other private ones or to homeschooling.

It’s also why parents in Queens District 26 are rebelling: Solid middle- and working-class black families are appalled that the system has put their kids on the path to nowhere, when they had every reason to believe the next generation would exceed them.

On the other side of things, it’s also why the teacher-union-controlled state education authorities have suspended all meaningful academic assessments for yet another year: They don’t want to risk parents learning how far behind their kids have fallen. They know the terrible news will prompt more public fury.

  1. They (the education system leaders) have decided that math, science, English, reading and writing are all racist and should not be taught, and IF they are, there won’t be any grades. Grades are racist, too.
So they mold their social skills (as it were) like how to feel guilty, how to know you are racist, how to see racism in everything, and how it’s going to be racist when they get out of school and find that they are too stupid to even qualify for a cashiers job at McDonalds.
Welfare will be racist, too, but they will get over THAT.

    Democrats.
They F up EVERYTHING they touch.
Once they are involved in anything — ANYTHING – it gets worse and worse, while they extoll how great they REALLY are doing. The media trumpets their success, too.

    Biden got 80 million votes.
They didn’t F THAT up, huh?

  2. The first teachers are parents. Generally, If your child can read prior to Kindergarten, they will be successful. Now, I’m sure somebody will have a snarky report, or a harsh rebuke about my comment, but the common denominator among successful children is that they can read age appropriate books prior to entrance in school. Note that I do not say they are from rich, well established families – they come from all walks of life. Their parents may not have been well educated, they may be single parents, or parents trapped in the harsh realities of life. Consider this – they all have one thing in common – they made reading a priority to their children.

Take my comments for what they are worth. I taught for a very long time and am modestly retired, so I’ve seen first hand quite a bit of this over the years. Lastly, don’t count on anyone to do this for your child except yourself. Your kids will thank you for it.
