How much renters owe varies greatly from one state and county to the next, according to data provided to CNBC by Surgo Ventures, a nonprofit organization focusing on health and data.
Across the country, the average renter household in arrears owes $3,700. The typical debt in Alabama is $2,700. In California, meanwhile, it’s closer to $5,300.
In some areas, renters face an even larger debt. In San Mateo County, California, the typical renter who’s behind is $8,700 in the hole. Struggling renters in Bergen County, New Jersey, owe an average of $6,400. A study earlier this year by New York University found that thousands of renters in New York City have debts over $10,000.

If they were given money from the government they should have been paying their rent. The ones I feel sorry for are the ones that jobs were cut but for some reason they were not able to get help. The government said they couldn’t get evicted so they used that money on their “wants” instead of paying their “needs”. In a few months you are going to see a lot of homeless people. The ones that wasted that money. I’m sure it won’t be til next Spring…..I mean you can’t throw them out at Christmas time……and you can’t put them out into the cold. I can hear the excuses already. The landlords are out millions of dollars that they probably will never see.

And there is a thought of evictions? Where the hell will all these people relocate too? Everyones back yards? Dont laugh….thats why the can is getting kicked down the road. With all these trillions being thrown around, student debt, credit card debt, congress not passing a budget,.climate change, fires in the midwest….china winter olympics in 6 months…..be mindful that amnesty is also being discussed. It is happening big right here in Salisbury have talked to local landlords they are loosing big time and one good thing will come out of it all the slum lord houses will be sold and hopefully either tore down or sold to people that just want to be good neighbors. Say a prayer for the people who live in the city every night.
