Fish kill’: Why are so many fish dying and washing ashore on Assateague Island?

A large number of dead fish have been washing up on the side of the road in the Virginia district of Assateague Island in recent days.

In a Facebook post, Assateague Island National Seashore examines the possible reason for what it calls a “fish kill.”

A recent heat wave is likely the reason for so many fish dying. When water heats up it holds less oxygen than cooler water. Some species of fish can’t adapt well to the changes in temperatures and oxygen levels and begin dying, according to the post.

The dead fish that have been seen are Menhaden, a fish high in Omega-3 and used for fish oil supplements, fishing bait, and fertilizer.

  1. Isn’t that the job of the DNR and people who study marine life with all the testing they have. Sounds like they better get right on it because they can determine the source.

  2. Simple they didn’t receive vaccinations and not masking. Poor fish. CDC recommended fishing with a mask to slow the spread to fish obviously republicans don’t care.

  3. pollution and yes you are right where is dnr both va and md along with mid atlantic marine fisheries and the feds? I’m sure they can find a reason for everyone to stop doing anything and everything they are doing. When all along it’s the government with their corporate masters who are the real problem!
