Dewey Beach Police Officer Hospitalized

A Dewey Beach Police Officer remains hospitalized Sunday after being knocked unconscious by a Georgetown man Saturday night.
The suspect Brandon T. Lewis (27) of Georgetown had been acting disorderly at the Starboard and was removed by staff. During his removal from the property Lewis assaulted a staff member and ran south from that location.
A Dewey Beach police officer saw Lewis running and attempted to detain him for that assault. Lewis was actively resisting the Dewey officer when a New Castle County off-duty officer who was in the area attempted to assist.
While this struggle ensued at Bellevue Street and Coastal Highway. , two unknown black men removed the New Castle County officer from the interaction briefly. The men have not been identified or located. As the New Castle County Officer reengaged in assisting the Dewey Officer, Lewis struck the Dewey Officer knocking him unconscious.
The New Castle County Officer and a concerned citizen then were able to detain Lewis until other officers arrived.
The Dewey Officer and the New Castle County officer were transported to Beebe for treatment. The New Castle County officer was treated for facial lacerations and released.
The Dewey Officer was admitted and is being treated for a concussion.
Lewis was also transported to Beebe Medical Center for minor injuries and was released.
Lewis is charged with 2 counts of 2nd degree assault on a law enforcement officer , resisting arrest with force or violence, two counts of criminal mischief and two counts of disorderly conduct.
He was arraigned at the Justice of the Peace Court #3 and is being held at the Sussex County Correctional Institution on $35,000 bail.
The following agencies assisted: Rehoboth Beach Police, Department of Natural Resources Police (Parks), Delaware State Police Troop 7, Delaware State Police Aviation Section, Bethany Beach Police, Lewes Police, South Bethany Police, Fenwick Island Police, Selbyville Police
The investigation continues.
