The owners and editors of Sports Illustrated are betting that a transgender man on the cover of their 2021 swimsuit edition will change heterosexual attitudes, shift the magazine’s public image, and help their imminent Initial Public Offering (IPO) on Wall Street.
“I’m am so happy, honored, and humbled to share that I’m the 1st trans woman to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated!” transgender model Leyna Bloom said on Instagram. The issue also includes special covers for tennis ace Naomi Osaka and rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Back in the day a SI subscription was one of my genius Christmas gifts for my sons. They were crazy about sports and couldn’t wait for the mail and devoured the contents. There was that one annual issue that kind of pushed the boundaries but aside from that pretty much ok. Continued yearly until they headed to college at which point the bloom was off the rose, and I let it lapse.
NOW SI has been woke for a number of years, and they have suffered like most other print media from the digital age. A look at their subscription numbers should be more revealing than the thongs and bikinis.
But with this latest cover choice we can all agree they’ve really dicked up their feature issue.
