It happens so often that it’s become a cultural touchstone and the butt of many jokes. Even if you have never tried ordering a McFlurry only to discover that the ice cream machine is indefinitely out of service, it feels like a ubiquitous experience that brings just a little bit of frustration but quite a bit of laughter. The McDonald’s ice cream machine is seemingly always on the fritz, in need of repair, or otherwise out of commission almost all the time as far as we’re concerned, and a joke about it will always land.
Apparently, the machines might not be broken but disassembled during the labor-intensive cleaning and disinfecting process. When there is an actual mechanical issue, the machine can’t be fixed until a repair technician from the manufacturer arrives (via Wired). In any case, there is some truth to McDonald’s ice cream machine problem, and its competitors definitely know it.
